Composite Image Making.

  • Digital compositing is the process of digitally assembling multiple images to make a final image, typically for print.

Artist Research:

George Logan:

Born in Bellshill, near Glasgow, Scotland, George studied at Blackpool College of Photography before moving to London where he is currently based. His work is always imaginative, often poignant and not without a healthy dose of humour. George is a muti-faceted talent, equally at home on location or in the studio, working with people, animals, locations or still life.
George is passionate about wildlife conservation and a long-time supporter of The Born Free Foundation, regularly shooting their campaigns. He has traveled extensively around Africa photographing wildlife and documenting big cat rescues.
Logans photos present surrealism and create humour. For example this first photo of the Lion with wings is not realistic, and you would never find a lion like that. However the way it is edited and the details of the lighting the wings and shadows makes it look real. The connotations of the photo are that lions are seen as courageous and mighty but when left alone, are very peaceful and angel like.

Again it is unlikely you'll ever see this happening but Logan presents the scenario so well and edits it to great level that he convinces the audience that its real. The calmness on the street around the elephant presents a sense of normality as nobody is standing around watching or trying to help. It also presents the elephant as mighty and the most powerful animal, as they are known to 'rule the Jungle'

Task 1- Getting use to the editing technique:

In this task we used photos given to use by our teacher and did a step by step of how to create composite photos. The tools we used in photoshop were, Quick Selection tool, layer mask, copy and paste. Firstly we used the quick selection tool to copy the duck and then paste to the picture of the tower bridge. Once this was done i copy the layer of the duck three times and changed the name to help later. I then changed the position and size of each duck. I then did Layer Mask and started to blur in the ducks to make them look like they were actually in the water, with my brush at 30% opacity.
My final image is:
AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
My idea for Composite Image Making was to edit photographs where animals are seen in an unusual setting or a place they never would be seen. My idea was formed around my research of George Logan, who's use of an elephant into a quiet village gave me the idea of having a pig in London.
I used photos i already had to create these images. However my backgrounds of London were taken on my phone and the animals were taken on my Nikon D3500, which caused the quality different to make the final products to not look as good.
This made me try another image where both photos were taken on my camera, creating the Goose in the puddle idea. This image looked more realistic

On each picture, as shown above, i also changed the colour balance and saturation to make the tone of the animal fit in with the overall photo. On the Goose in the water i also got the shadow of the duck on the ground from the originally picture and put it on the edited one. Once this was done i also changed the opacity to get rid of the grass and mud of the image and to create just a shadow. I then did the same put copied the head of the goose and made it look like a reflection in the water.
AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

The artist research was helpful as I begun to see how i could make me own version of Composite images. I really liked George Logan's surrealism approach and how it makes the photo look so realistic even though the situation wasn't. Even though my final images were not as clean cut and as realistic.I believe they show a hint of George Logan's work within them
AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
I believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of composite images and George Logan.  The final images:
