Documentary

Definitions:

  • Documentary - usually refers to a popular form of photography used to chronicle events or environments both significant and relevant to history and historical events as well as everyday life.

Henri Cartier Bresson:

The photo above is described as the "decisive moment". The decisive moment is a concept made popular by the street photographer, photojournalist, and Magnum co-founder Henri Cartier-Bresson. The decisive moment refers to capturing an event that is ephemeral and spontaneous, where the image represents the essence of the event itself.

Artist Research:

James Ravilious was born at Eastbourne, England, the second son of Eric Ravilious, the war artist. Ravilious takes black and white photography of rural life and landscape from the 1970's to 1990's - mainly taken in the west of England, but also in France, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and the English Lake District. In the early 1970's James took up photography (self-taught), What started as a short-term project grew into a seventeen year obsession. In that time James took over 80,000 black and white images of all aspects of local life: landscape, farming, everyday life in the local towns and villages, and their special occasions. He also borrowed and copied over 5,000 early photographs of the same area.

I originally was going to do countryside photography based on James Ravilious' work. However, I changed my mind and decided to look into christmas and London photography.

Bruce Davidson:

Bruce Davidson began taking photographs at the age of ten in Oak Park, Illinois. While attending Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University, he continued to further his knowledge and develop his passion. He was later drafted into the army and stationed near Paris. There he met Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the founders of the Magnum Photos.Bruce Landon Davidson is an American photographer. He is known for photographing communities usually hostile to outsiders.
New York City's subway system has been known as a source of inspiration and fear. This dark, democratic environment provides the setting for photographer Bruce Davidson's re-issued first extensive series in colour. Subway riders are set against a gritty, graffiti-strewn background, displayed in tones that Davidson describes as "an iridescence like that I had seen in photographs of deep-sea fish". Never before has the subway been portrayed in such detail, revealing the interplay of its inner landscape.
