Form

Definitions:

  •        Form is a three dimensional shape, such as a cube, sphere or cone.
  •        Sculpture and 3D design are about creating forms.
  •        In 2D artworks, tone and perspective can be used to create an illusion of form.

Irving Penn:

Irving Penn was one of the twentieth century's great photographers, known for his arresting images and masterful printmaking.Born in 1917 in Plainfield, New Jersey to immigrant parents, Penn attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts from 1934–38 and studied with Alexey Brodovitch. After the Second World War, as Penn quickly developed a reputation for his striking style in still life and portraiture. Liberman sent him around the world on portrait and fashion assignments. These assignments confirmed Penn's preference for photographing in the controlled environment of a studio, where he could trim away anything that was not essential to his compositions and hone in on his subjects.

Images that need improving:

These images were selected as I feel they were not the best angle or background and didn't look aesthetically pleasing.  For the top two photos, I tried to take a photo of hands to show different parts of human form. However, the backdrop had a fold in it so it doesn't look good.
The last image was taken with the wrong exposure and ended up almost black. So i edited the exposure to so you good see the image. If I was to reshoot this photo I would have taken the time to change the exposure properly.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
My idea for recording Form was to photograph Human forms like hands, bones under the skin and eyes etc. I was inspired from my research of Irving Penn. This photographer also inspired me edit my best images into black and white, adapting the contrast and more.
The images came out as I expected, however I wish I had a lens with a better zoom to get the more detailed pictures. i wanted my photos to show happiness and fun. I think my images have portrayed this in many ways. For example, not only do the originally photos have light tones and colours in. The edits still give a light colour and connect with the happy expressions on their faces.

Best selected images...
The image of the collarbone was at a low angle so that I had a shadow and more defined bones. I also wanted a plain background which I did by having the sparkly wallpaper
. This was done to create more focus on the model.
Another image in my best images, is the photo of the eye which was inspired by the images in my image bank. I then went on to edit this picture into black and white to look more like Penn's work.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
I used my Nikon D3500 camera to take these photos. I tried to adjust the camera setting, like shutter speed, aperture and ISO to make the photos look their best. However, I can’t remember what every photo was taken in.

The settings of my best images are:

Editing my photos from my first photo shoot:

Original photos:

Photo 1:

Here I changed the Photo into black and white.  I then changed the levels to darken the darkest parts and to add more depth to the shadows. After i changed the curves to add a more  smoother contrast. Lastly, i added a higher brightness to highlight the more whiter areas, and lowered the contrast.

Photo 2:

On this photo i did the same as the last one, here I changed the Photo into black and white.  I then changed the levels to darken the darkest parts and to add more depth to the shadows. After i changed the curves to add a more smoother contrast. I changed more of the Curves on this photo than the last, as can be seen in the photo on the side.

>>>>For these photos i did the same things as the ones above<<<<

The originals:

In every photo I changed the photos into black and white and then changed the levels, curves and- in the last three- I added texture to face. I did this to make my work look more like my artist research, Irving Penn, who influenced the way I took my picture. The end photos look vey effective, However in the second photo I like the original photo more as it looks better in colour, showing the highlight on her cheeks and how her lipstick matches the flowers. Below is the setting i used to add texture to the photo.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
The artist research was helpful as I liked the angels and the fact that I could edit my photos of form to show more texture. My research of Irving Penn helped me focus on portraits . i also like the black and white effect so changed the photos after and enhanced the contrasts and levels.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
I believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of form and the images of Irving Penn's work.  The next images I have edited to black and white to fit the inspired photographer's work and to look more effective. I also changed the levels and curves.
